The Treasure Cay Community Centre is a non-profit organisation setup for the benefit of the residents in Treasure Cay. Inside the community centre you will find the Treasure Cay Community Church, and the Rose Mary Roberts Library. All activities held by our Cay Events also take place on our premises.
During the torrent month's that would be hurricane season our community centre serves as a hurricane shelter. All preparations are made to the community centre building to withstand the forces of Mother Nature.
The idea of the Treasure Cay Community Centre was born in 1971 when then Treasure Cay Ltd. Manager, Mr. Cassiopa urged the Treasure Cay Church Trustees (established in 1969) to consider a true community center rather than building just a church on land that Treasure Cay Ltd. had donated in 1970. Such a facility would then be able to hold church services, house a library and serve as a true and functioning community center for all of Treasure Cay.
By the annual meeting of the Church Trustees in 1973 the various approvals had been obtained and Treasure Cay Ltd. gave further approval and donated the current location of the Community Centre instead of the Long Building location for the proposed interdenominational church. Transfer of the new property location (Deed of Trust) was finally obtained on March 11, 1976.
For a bit of original local history: The Trustees at the time were Gurth Roberts, Isabella Bootle, Oliver Durrell, Katrine Rieley, Courtney Brown, John Crawford, Leslie Burdon, Warren Steiner and Joan Appleton. Elsie Porter spearheaded the Fundraising Drive and thanks to house tours, sales of work and handicrafts, bake sales, white elephant sales and an intense pledge system by second home owners at the end of 1973 almost $33,000 had been raised.
Ground was broken for the building on March 11, 1974 and by Christmas of that year the building had been dedicated and the first interdenominational community church services were being held. The Library had opened under the guidance of Elsie Porter and “was proving to be a successful venture” and was later continued by Rose Mary Roberts and a team of volunteers.
Hilland Albury made the simple cross for the sanctuary part of the building and in 1975 Bill Porter carved the quill and cross for the front of the building. By 1986 all the bills were paid off, various landscaping was donated in the names of Hugh Laughlin, Helen Frederick, Ruth Lister and Eric Appleton. Hymnbooks were given in memory of Shell Rieley, an Alton Lowe painting was donated in memory of Van De Wiel, a pulpit bible for Hugh Laughlin, small tapestries from Coventry Cathedral for Eric Appleton and for Ollie Durrell, bibles for the use of the congregation. Several years later chimes were donated in memory of Bill Porter. Later a beautiful white piano was donated by Darrel and Anna Snapp and Edna Lacey and Mollie Plumb would alternate music duties for church services.
Gratefully, quite a bit of the items of this original history is still with us today, despite the many trials and tribulations and hurricanes. The white piano unfortunately was destroyed by Hurricane Dorian on September 1, 2019 after offering us many years of great enjoyment by various talented individuals.
To date, the Treasure Cay Community Centre is still the home of Sunday morning interdenominational worship services, is still the home of the Library, which also suffered greatly from Dorian. Is used by a number of community events such as bible studies, book clubs, annual meetings for community organizations, various entertainment venues for the community and is also rented for private functions such as special events (baptisms, birthday and wedding parties) as well as local government meetings and is our local election voting station. Most importantly, it is our hurricane shelter (complete with showers and water facility) and during emergencies has been used as the food distribution center and was a life saving facility during Hurricane Dorian.
In other words, THIS IS YOUR TRUE COMMUMITY CENTER. It is our hope that as we rebuild our community from Dorian that all of our home owners (full time and second home owners) will find it in their hearts to continue to support this worthwhile, much loved and used facility by both volunteering time and efforts on the various committees that make this facility successful for the community. Also please keep in mind we operate 100% by donations from you, the community and ask that you please help support us through your generous donations that may be made via tax deductible means.
Please stop in and check out your Treasure Cay Community Centre.
